Preventable and curable infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Increasing antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics have been observed in N. gonorrhoeae.
Currently, no vaccine is licensed for the prevention of gonorrhoea.
Transmission
Sexually-transmitted infection.
Symptoms
Gonorrhoea causes different symptoms in women and men.
Most women with gonorrhea do not have symptoms or do not notice them. If left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to infertility in both men and women and other sexual and reproductive health complications.
It also increases the risk of HIV infection.
