About vaccines

A vaccine is a biological preparation which is designed to produce an immune response in the body to a particular disease.

Introducing killed or weakened disease-causing micro-organisms into the body results in the production of antibodies, which are our natural response to a disease threat. These antibodies are then already present in the body so that if and when the immune system encounters the same disease-causing organism (eg: Chicken Pox, Tuberculosis etc), it will mount a response to prevent the disease. Vaccines switch on the mechanism which allow our bodies to fight disease.
