Mpox

General Information

Human mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). The disease is endemic in some regions of Central and West Africa.

Historically the disease is transmitted from animals to humans, however in the last years human-to-human transmission has been observed leading to global outbreaks.

Transmission

The disease mainly spreads from person to person through close contact.

Transmission occurs through exposure to bodily fluids, lesions on the skin or on internal mucosal surfaces, respiratory particles, and contaminated objects.

Symptoms

Symptoms include a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes and fever.

Epidemiology

Between January 2022 and August 2024, over 99,000 cases of Mpox have been reported globally, with 208 deaths.
