Acne

General Information

Cutibacterium acnes is a bacterium that is a normal inhabitant of human skin. While it’s typically harmless, it plays a significant role in the development of acne vulgaris.

Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease and 8th most common medical condition globally.

Transmission

Through skin contact.

Symptoms

The symptoms associated with Cutibacterium acnes (commonly linked to acne vulgaris) include a variety of skin lesions and related effects:

  • Comedones (clogged hair follicles)
  • Papules (small, raised, inflamed lesions on the skin, less than 1 cm in diameter)
  • Pustules: Similar to papules but filled with pus, indicating inflammation and infection.
  • Nodules and Cysts (in severe cases)
  • Secondary Symptoms: scars, erythema, hyperpigmentation

Estimated to affect 9.4% of the global population.

Approximately 231.2 million prevalent cases globally.
