In the context of the EUPHA 6th European Public Health Conference which will take place in Brussels from 13 to 16 November 2013, Vaccines Europe will be hosting a lunch session on Friday 15 November, 12h30 – 13h30 called “The Last Mile Challenge for Vaccination – Are We There Yet?”

Vaccination is the most effective public health intervention but to take full advantage immunization programmes should be fully implemented. Today several recommended vaccines remain underused with important health consequences and societal costs. While keeping seniors healthy is critical in the face of a major demographic shift, flu vaccination coverage in almost all EU Member States fell short of WHO and EU objectives. Since 2010 there have been worrying resurgences in cases of measles in 24 European countries, with an increasing number of outbreaks, hospitalisations and exported cases across and outside Europe. Despite recent efforts from authorities, more needs to be done at national and EU level to tackle these public health challenges.

  • Why is there a decrease in coverage for flu and measles?
  • How can we optimise the impact of influenza vaccination given low coverage vaccination rates and vaccine effectiveness values not as high as expected?
  • How could innovative communication techniques help GPs and general public?
  • What role does the industry play?

The speakers of the round table will try to answer these questions and propose relevant approaches and practical actions.
