In 2009 the Council of the European Union issued a recommendation on seasonal influenza vaccination proposing to reach a vaccination coverage rate of 75% in the EU for older age groups recommended by WHO. In addition the recommendation encourages the Member States to increase seasonal influenza vaccine uptake in other at-risk groups as defined by ECDC, as well as in healthcare workers.
In view of this recommendation Vaccines Europe conducted a Health Economic Study available here, to develop supporting evidence encouraging Member States to reach the EU Health Council vaccination targets. The project aims to estimate on the one hand the number of people eligible for influenza vaccination in the EU Member States, under the 75% coverage target for different risk groups and on the other hand the opportunity costs of not reaching vaccination coverage targets as far as burden of illness and economic costs are concerned in a set of Member States.
