Annual Health & Economic Benefits of Influenza Vaccination

Influenza is a serious infectious disease with potentially serious consequences. Every year in the EU, the ECDC estimates that on average 40,000 premature deaths occur due to seasonal influenza. Globally this figure rises to 500,000 (WHO). Nevertheless, influenza can be prevented, achieving important health and economic benefits. These benefits can be optimised if the EU Member States were to reach the 75% vaccination coverage target agreed upon by the Council for the elderly and at risk groups.
